Remote Learning Option - St. Gabriel Catholic School

What is RLO?

Remote Learning Option (RLO) is offered to any parent who does not feel that it is safe for their child to attend school in person because the child has a medical condition, a family member has a medical condition, he/she is under isolation or a quarantine, or by parent request.

This option is a parent choice and differs from distance learning that is initiated by the school.

How do I sign up for RLO?

Parents will notify the principal if they are choosing RLO. Parents will need to complete an RLO agreement form to enroll.

Parents may begin RLO at any time but will be asked to commit to this option until mid-trimester or the end of the trimester. This option may be renewed for the duration of the school year. This applies to cases other than quarantine or illness during the school year.

What will RLO look like?

Students will participate in synchronous and asynchronous instruction.

Synchronous = [learning] happens at the same time. Students receive immediate feedback.
Asynchronous = [learning] doesn't happen at the same time. Participants can learn at their own pace.

Teachers will live stream lessons at specified times during the day and connect the remote learners with the classroom via Zoom or Google Meet. Remote learners will be notified of the live stream session times at least by the day prior.

Any materials that are needed for live stream sessions will be sent in advance.

Teachers will use dedicated RLO devices with cameras in the classroom to include students in large and small group discussions.

What this model won’t be:

Students passively watching the classroom for six hours behind a computer.
Busy work sent home for the student to complete.
Parents as the lead teacher for their child.

Will my child get the same quality of education?

Yes! The RLO is built on the concept of a Hybrid Learning Environment. Teachers will plan virtual lessons first, then determine how the lesson can be brought into the classroom. This ensures that even if a student is not in the classroom physically, he/she is still a fully active participant.

How is RLO different from home schooling?

RLO or a home-based learning environment is not the same as homeschooling. With RLO, the teacher still drives the instruction to meet your child’s needs. Teachers plan instruction and how material is presented, assess students, and provide feedback. Teachers are prepared to use various techniques to tailor instruction and explanations to just what each student needs.

RLO still incorporates the social element of collaborative learning that is an essential skill in 21st learning environments.
Parents become facilitators of the learning environment by helping students prepare materials for their learning environment and limit distractions.

Expectations of the Parent/Student who choose RLO

Parents will be responsible for picking up any materials needed and bringing them back to school.
Students are expected to turn in all classwork assigned by the assignment due date.
Students must have a reliable device (if not provided by the school) and Internet connection.
Students are expected to participate in all live activities as directed by the teacher.
Students participating in temporary remote learning may participate in school-sponsored and based activities if they meet the requirements for participating in those activities.
Students participating in temporary remote learning may participate in parish-sponsored activities (athletics) if they meet the parish requirements for participating in those activities.
