Elementary

Nurturing Every Child

Children in grades 1-5 thrive in a nurturing environment designed to leverage their natural curiosity and joy of learning. Empowered problem solvers and collaborators are encouraged to think big, synthesize and test ideas, and celebrate the learning process.  Academics integrated with movement, fine arts, service to others, and faith formation are woven together into a seamless experience of personalized growth.

Elementary Academic Program

Students’ day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m.  Courses of study include religious education, literacy, grammar, writing,

mathematics, science, social studies, penmanship (cursive handwriting starts in 2nd grade), foreign language (Spanish), music, visual arts, STEM, and library.

In the primary grades, literacy development focuses on phonics and fluency.  In intermediate grades, the shift of literacy is from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”.  Students become more independent and focus on comprehension and vocabulary development.

Saint Gabriel School follows the Archdiocese of Louisville Curriculum Framework.

Grades K-2 are self-contained.  Grade 3 is a hybrid schedule- students stay with their homeroom teacher for core subjects, then switch classes for science, social studies, and English.  In grade 4, each teacher teaches two subjects.  Students change classes three times per day.  In grades 5-6, each teacher teaches one subject.

Experiential Learning

Elementary students are introduced to robotics through BeeBots and Spheros.  They also learn to create designs using Tinkercad software and print them on our school’s 3D printers.   See our Instructional Technology page to learn more.

Students tend to the school garden, learning about soil composition, companion planting and harvesting the produce they have grown to support our Farm to Fork program
