Kindergarten

Lifelong love of learning begins here

We believe our students come to Kindergarten with a natural curiosity and eagerness to learn.  Our goal as educators is to harness that curiosity and foster a lifelong love of learning.  Through hands-on, play-based learning, our students engage in whole group and small group activities, learning centers, movement activities, and development of social-emotional skills.

Kindergarten Academic Program

Early literacy has proven to have a significant effect on a student’s success in school and their life-long learning potential. A long-term study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation showed that millions of American children get to fourth grade without learning to read proficiently. In fact, 88 percent of students who failed to earn a high school diploma were struggling readers in third grade.

At Saint Gabriel School, most students become proficient readers by first grade and many begin reading independently by the second semester of Kindergarten.

SGS’s strong academic program takes place in a Christ-centered atmosphere and our students develop a myriad of skills built on this foundation. Respect, kindness, and good listening skills are just some of the virtues our students develop.

Classrooms provide an active, vibrant atmosphere where learning is fun and teachers nurture and guide each child. Language, memory, imagination, empathy and a positive attitude toward learning are all achievements for Kindergarten.

Kindergarten is given age appropriate homework to reinforce skills learned during the day.  Homework activities may include a reading log, sight words, and numeracy activities.

Teachers communicate with parents daily utilizing our learning management system, Schoology.  Kindergarten utilizes standards-based grading, which gives parents detailed feedback on how their child is progressing.  Teachers also use data binders to track student progress.

We LOVE our Kinders!

Beyond the Classroom : Co-Curricular Activities

SGS Kindergarten creates many memories for our children as well!  Special events include Little Leopards Camp, Boo Hoo/ Yahoo Breakfast (for the parents), Big Buddy/ Little Buddy program, pumpkin patch field trip, Halloween Trick or Treat, Grandparents Day, Thanksgiving Feast, Catholic Schools Week mass, Kindergarten Love Program, and more!

We value the experience that in-person and virtual field trips provide as well.  Previous field trips include: Huber’s farm and pumpkin patch, Louisville Science Center, Louisville Zoo, Fern Creek Library, and more!

Big/ Little Buddy Program

Students in grade 8 are paired with students in Kindergarten.  They meet regularly to participate in various activities including collaborative reading and writing activities and sitting together during all-school mass. This fosters a sense of leadership in our older students.  Buddies enjoy seeing each other at other school activities.

Kindergarten students are also paired with Preschool Little Buddies. These buddies also meet regularly to participate in collaborative activities.  This opportunity lets them be the big kid!

For a complete list of Co-Curricular Activities, view our Clubs and Activities page.
